ERIN (CRICKET) REICHENBERGER

Personal Statement

I received my bachelors in Mechanical Engineering at Wichita State University (please refrain from Dorothy and tornado jokes) and earned my living my numerous years as a designer. I found my way back to school and graduated with a masters in Biomedical Engineering from Drexel Univeristy. After working for several more years, I am happily working on my Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at Drexel. Few things arrest my attention like B&W photography, decrepit industrial buildings, a good radio program, and dystopian topics. When I have free-time, I spend it programming, cycling, traveling/hosting (couchsurfing), taking photos, urban exploration and when I am exceedingly lucky -- napping.

Research Statement

All of my Ph.D. research projects have studied the interactions of microbes and their environment, and how they can influence each other. One of my first projects pertained to GI bacteria and their effects on pain perception where I used 16S metagenomic next-generation sequences to compare the human gut microbial communities between healthy controls and those suffering from chronic pain (CRPS). However I am currently working on how environmental factors affect nucleotide compositions. In my most recent publication, I employed numerous shotgun-sequenced metagenomic data-sets (183 data-sets, 31+million sequences) as well as data from all currently available fully-sequenced prokaryotic genomes (as of October 2014) to show that both phylogeny and environment influence prokaryotic nucleotide composition.
